This time of year, Santa Clause needs all the help he can get. That’s why Cradlepoint is thrilled to provide connectivity again this Christmas in support of those who track Father Christmas during his worldwide gift-giving mission.
At the NORAD Tracks Santa (NTS) Operations Center at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, for the last 60 years staff and volunteers have spent Christmas Eve giving children updates on Santa’s location as he traverses the globe. What began as a telephone-based service has evolved into a hotline and a website with interactive features. Families can track Santa through social media and user-friendly apps.
Of course, none of this would be possible without Internet connectivity. Hundreds of Santa tracking volunteers at the NTS Operations Center will use Cradlepoint AER1600 dual-modem routers to connect to Verizon’s high-speed 4G LTE network. With so many children depending on them, these volunteers need fast, reliable connectivity with optimal throughput to update social media, respond to emails, and more.
Cradlepoint’s Enterprise Support team will use its cloud-based network management platform (NetCloud Manager) to remotely monitor the networks — because it’s visions of sugar plums that dance in children’s heads, not downtime.
How to Track Santa
Online — Starting at 12:01 a.m. MST on Dec. 24, website visitors can watch Santa prepare for his flight. NORAD’s “Santa Cams” will stream videos as the plump, jolly elf makes his way over various locations.
Apps and Social Media — NORAD Tracks Santa apps are available in the Windows, Apple, and Google Play stores, so parents and children can easily keep tabs on Santa via smartphones and tablets. Another option is search for “@noradsanta” in Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Google+.
Toll-Free Hotline — Beginning at 4 a.m. MST on Dec. 24, trackers worldwide can speak with a live phone operator to learn of Santa’s whereabouts. The toll-free number is 1-877-Hi-NORAD (1-877-446-6723).
Verizon has been providing the toll-free hotline since 2002.
Email — Those interested in tracking Santa’s status via email can send a message to firstname.lastname@example.org
In-Vehicle Tracking — OnStar subscribers can press the OnStar button in their vehicles to locate Santa.
History of Tracking Santa
The U.S. military began the Santa tracking program in 1955, when a local media advertisement directed children to call Santa directly. However, the number was misprinted, so instead of reaching Santa, a call went through to the Crew Commander on duty at the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center. Thus began the tradition, which NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) has carried on since it was created in 1958.
