Svitzer Marine

From real-time tracking to crew and operational management, enabling the benefits of always-on connectivity and on-board ICT is no easy task for a marine fleet operating in geographies around the world. Svitzer wanted to enable a new era of modern digital operations and standardised ship-to-shore communications for all its vessels; managing the entire distributed global fleet network from one central location.

Part of the Maersk Group, Svitzer has been providing safety and support services at sea since 1833. With 4,000 employees, a fleet of 430 vessels, and operations all over the world, today the company is the global market leader in towage and emergency response. From the icy waters off the Siberian coastline to the sun scorched ports of Chile, each day Svitzer’s tugboats undertake complex tasks with care and precision.

Managing a fleet of tugs around the world is a challenge, especially if every country around the world has a different implementation of 3G/4G/ LTE and ship-to-shore WiFi. Svitzer wanted to standardise the IT on its global tugboat fleet, implementing cloud connectivity, satellite connections, failover capabilities, and ship- to-shore connectivity so it could manage the entire fleet from a single, central management dashboard. This would enable Svitzer to switch on 21st century digital operations, eliminate paper-based reporting, and enable real-time updates and access to critical documentation such as health and safety manuals. Determined to find a cloud-managed product capable of supporting its global fleet, the Svitzer IT team had struggled to find a solution that met all its requirements. So when Khurram Inam, Svitzer’s Regional IT Manager for Europe, suggested that Cradlepoint’s COR Series networking solution might deliver the mission- critical connectivity needed, a comprehensive test trial was undertaken in Europe to determine how well it would cope with the deployment and operational challenges of a marine environment. Engineered to protect against extreme temperatures, humidity, vibrations, water splash, and transient voltage, Cradlepoint’s ruggedised solution proved more than capable of surviving the tough working conditions Svitzer’s tugboats encounter. Featuring multi-carrier 4G LTE support, Ethernet WiFi WAN, software defined radio, GPS reporting, and advanced security, Svitzer has been able to roll-out modern ICT functionality to its entire global fleet.

Standardise On-Board Connectivity & Communications: Using Cradlepoint’s COR Series solution, Svitzer was able to equip its global tug fleet with the very latest IC technology and enable better, more streamlined communications with vessels. This new bulletproof connectivity means it’s easy for the global IT team to troubleshoot problems and minimise downtime for on-board users. Plus, the performance of Svitzer’s on-board business applications has undergone a significant uptick. All of which has boosted fleet uptime and productivity, while enabling an impressive reduction in the IT support resources required to maintain day-to-day business continuity.

“We’ve been able to equip our global fleet with standardised and reliable on-board ICT, giving our people in the field the technology they need to operate effectively and safely,” said Khurram Inam.

Mission-Critical Connectivity: Designed to deliver mission-critical, always-on connectivity in even the most challenging environments, Cradlepoint’s COR Series technology provides enterprise grade 3G/4G/LTE communications and supports a host of other standards that are essential to enable ship-to-shore communications anywhere in the world.

Inam added, “Reliable, dependable communications at sea are essential. Cradlepoint has helped us revolutionise how we communicate with our vessels globally.”

Centralised Management and Control: Cradlepoint’s NetCloud Manager (NCM) platform makes it easy for Svitzer to deploy and manage all its geographically distributed network locations. Delivering instant insights and intelligent management, the central IT team can remotely resolve connectivity issues, configure groups and devices and remotely update firmware.

“With NCM, it’s possible to see the whole fleet from one dashboard and provide proactive support globally. Updates can also be carried out with just a few clicks.”

Security: Securing the network was a priority for Svitzer. Combined with Cradlepoint’s cloud-managed networking solution, Zscaler Internet Security delivers protection from attacks, viruses and worms and can be centrally managed to ensure standardised policy enforcement and destination filtering.

“The Zscaler security platform supplied by Cradlepoint helped complete the circle on IT connectivity on our fleets. The intuitive dashboard enables us to monitor any malicious activity and improve company protections.”
