Nemertes Consulting recently interviewed 12 companies that use cellular broadband for Wireless WAN, exploring myths and truths about using LTE and 5G for enterprise networking.
Here are their findings. 

It’s More Expensive

Fact: Wireless broadband can improve operational costs. Cellular data plans are generally straight-forward and can be managed predictably.

Respondents replaced lower-bandwidth, more expensive wired circuits with higher-bandwidth, less expensive Wireless WAN links, saving 53.7% on average.

It’s Complicated

Fact: Cellular broadband is far more agile and, in many ways, less complicated than wired networks. 

In addition to the cost and service improvement benefits, participants also gained agility, rapid connectivity of new and temporary locations, and improved uptime.

Cellular broadband is more reliable than most broadband services.

75% of participants said Wireless WAN (WWAN) availability was as good as or better than with wired links. Organizations with WWAN at more than 90% of sites reduced annual downtime at each site dramatically — by an average of 62% for those using failover WWAN, and by an average of 88% for those adopting primary WWAN. The greater reliability for primary WWAN is perhaps attributable to the fact that those deploying it tended to have dual-carrier strategies at their sites, and/or service from multiple cell towers at each.

Wireless WAN (WWAN) saved study participants an average of 53.7%, with reductions in per-Mbps rates going as deep as 90%. In most cases, these companies replaced lower-bandwidth, more expensive wired circuits with higher-bandwidth, less-expensive WWAN links.

Simplified Architecture — Agile branching enables pop-ups in places where wiring is difficult or impossible; temporary locations; and seasonal stores.
